set in a fantasy world where strange creatures and zoomorphic beings co-exist peacefully, you are a vocalist looking to join one of the city's coolest bands. when you're picked to perform with them in an upcoming music festival as a 'test run', you're determined to do the best job you can. this, however, proves to be a lot more difficult than you were expecting...

caught in a slabmance is a short, light-hearted parody romance visual novel made using ren'py.lead game designer, producer, writer & coder✦ wrote the full game script, as well as relevant copy to promote the game
✦ coded the entire visual novel, learning the ren'py engine in a short amount of time
✦ determined the direction of the visual novel after brainstorming a general premise
✦ coordinated with artists as to what art assets would be needed
✦ established deadlines and ensured they were followed, as it needed to be released by valentine's day
✦ organised game testing and ensured bugs were fixed before launch
✦ successfully published the game, downloaded over 200 times

OVERVIEW

this parody visual novel ('VN') was created by a small team in a span of 5–6 months, comprising of myself as the sole writer and coder, and two artists. i was the lead game designer, informing the final direction of the visual novel, as well as the lead producer, managing the development team through the game's production, as well as through pre & post-launch.

CREATION PROCESS

after brainstorming the general premise and direction of the VN with the team, i produced a detailed plot breakdown that determined what art assets (notably, background art and character sprites) would be needed.

before starting the script, i researched how to use our engine of choice, ren'py, to determine 1) where we'll host the game, 2) how to format the script to streamline the inputting process, and 3) provide the artists with more specifics in terms of what art assets they need to produce.

i wrote and edited the script, making revisions according to feedback provided both by team members and external beta readers. i started coding a 'skeleton' of the game that i could insert art assets into once they were completed.

with all the art assets completed, i began coding the game in earnest. i consulted with the team during the process if i needed some art assets to be edited to suit the requirements of the program, or edited it myself where possible. i worked with the team to finalise the game's UI and UX (where we prioritised accessibility without sacrificing aesthetic) before preparing to export the game for beta testing.

once i hosted the game on itch.io, i provided the link to a small group of beta testers. i fixed any bugs or errors that arose during their playthroughs.

with beta testing completed, i finalised the appearance of the itch.io page before fully launching the game.

OVERVIEW

this dating simulator was created by a small team of 10~ artists, programmers and writers in a span of 6–8 months. i was the main writer of the project, and ultimately determined the game's design that would influence what both the programming, art and graphic design departments would create.

the game was created for a now retired pet collection game site called kaylune, centred around a fantasy world filled with magical creatures and zoomorphic beings.

CREATION PROCESS

after brainstorming the general premise and direction of the vn, which was further approved by the heads of each department, i wrote a detailed plot breakdown that outlined 1) character personalities, 2) story points and endings, 3) potential ideas as to how the programming department could code the game, and 4) what art assets would be needed.

once the plot breakdown was approved, i wrote and edited the script, making revisions according to feedback provided by team members.

during the writing process, i provided my inputs when the programming and art teams required it. once i had finished writing, i assisted both in coding the game and beta testing it for bugs and errors.

with beta testing completed, i helped the team launch the game for the community to enjoy.

ecco qui... a temporary place to store this (this'll turn into a design showcase for the cards)✦ stefano’s card is based on the tower, a card for chaos, change, upheaval… i think there’s an undercurrent to stefano that really does feel resentful about the plight the crew’s been put through & his role in that. naturally i think he’d be the one to make a corpse of his brother (and if i’m remembering correctly, you stand over him during the finale.) i also find it so interesting that you play the role of pushing people to scenes to ensure they see something new (or see something, in my case). and unrelated, but i drew this listening to the most upbeat italian pop song about the sea i know—figurati!these are also condensed notes for the rest because wow, this would be very long!✦ anderson’s & sandy’s cards are loosely based on the star, a card (in reverse) for disconnection, loss of faith, despair… the star connects their cards; anderson carries around a bottle + it’s fascinating that a man with a head full of liquor should still see things as they are with deep clarity; sandy does her aerial number with the net; the heart connects her with claude visually and her story in general. she reaches out for a freedom and love she can’t possess.✦ the sea creature’s card is based on the hermit, a card for solitude, loneliness, introspection... his story is still a bit elusive to me, but there’s such a depth to them ... i based it off the rooms and scenes i had experienced with him. the eye connects him visually with salacia, the seaweed and bubbles for his fishy-ness.✦ salacia’s card is based on the high priestess, a card for (feminine) intuition, mystery… it’s the most symmetrical/balanced piece, since i think she does deal with these dualities (good/evil, masculine/feminine) more so than the others. she feels pain as much as she deals it. an eye that cries over the creatures of the deep, a glass ball / moon for her mystical qualities.✦ claude’s card is based on the ace of cups, a card for love or repressed emotions… it’s just very moving to see unrequited love played with such earnest. the cup is vaguely like their buckets they carry, a heart that overflows with love/pain, and a crescent moon that maybe looks like a claw, haha.✦ chan’s card is based on the three of swords, a card for heartbreak, grief, hurt… which i think is a great summary of his story. chains for very obvious reasons, wrapped around his wrist, and he clutches its end in his own hands. taking back control or resigned to be controlled…? the swords also have snake-like hilts… just for fun.✦ trink’s card is definitely the most esoteric and most unlike a tarot card… which feels right, haha. it’s loosely based on death, a card for transformation or fear of it. this card could warrant its own essay because i think i’ve spent the most time with trink, but a hearts card was the card i picked during the very first preview, and that along with the monologue after stuck with me. the skull… because i didn’t want to draw the whole skeleton… a regular rose, because i found the tudor rose unappealing, and pearls… for those oysters…too long… too many words… but i hope you find it illuminating!
